Im trying a good college for game designing.I heard good things and bad things about it.
A lot of employers don’t like the proprietary, for-profit schools, like Devry and the AI chain of schools. I’d rather you check out the traditional, brick and mortar schools near you first.
Many/most employers in game design prefer that you major in either computer science or software engineering for the tech side of it, or in art, with a focus on digital media/game design/computer graphics/computer animation for the art side of it.
If you’re worried that your high school record isn’t strong enough to get into an art school – if art is your thing – then know that for most good art schools, your portfolio can balance that out. If you don’t have a portfolio, then there are two decent art schools that accept students without them – SCAD, and AAU.
If you want the tech side of things, but worry that your academics aren’t strong enough yet, then you can start at a community college. The computer science and software engineering programs at most ccs are actually quite good.
Judging by the TV ads, if you want to design Pac Man or Space Invaders, it is probably a decent choice. Or perhaps if you want to simulate laser light effects like in the classic 80’s movie "Tron". It looks like that is what they are doing in those ads.
I’ve only heard bad things. It’s a for-profit schools, and those should be avoided on principle. They are out to make money, not out to educate you. They charge more than non-profit schools (both public and private) and are less respected.
It will be very hard to learn that kind of thing online. You will want a campus based school if you are serious about it. Collins College in Arizona is considered one of the best for game design.
